Americana UK review - supporting Peter Bruntnell
Peter Bruntnell, The Whybirds and Jim Jones - Ent Shed , Bedford - 14th March 2009
£10 It doesn’t sound much and especially these days with the talk of billions lost and millions swindled it sounds like even less, but for just £10 a man could walk into a packed auditorium and catch three great live sets courtesy of those wonderful folks at East-West promotions. Surely they should be a charity?
To business.
A packed hall with standing room only ( and that was tight) saw Jim Jones take to the stage and silence any chit chat with his emotive confessionals and keening ballads. A troubadour in the real sense – just guitar, lyrics and voice. And what a voice, with more than hint of Bruce by way of Taunton rather than New Jersey. The songs came mainly from his new album ‘Daylight and Stars’ and each one was clearly defined did not pale into a general soup which is often the case with a new singer/songwriter introducing new material. It was the quality of the songs and the added splashes of colour provided by Dave Little that lifted this set well above the run of the mill. £10’s worth already – easily!
The headliner was indeed that. A taut and complex meal mainly taken from the Murder of Crows album the evening built into a surprisingly emotional affair as the material opened up to reveal its heart and the depth of the song writing talent on display. Danny Williams on Double bass was the only rhythm section – a dark solid backbone, Dave Little on harmonium and guitars an excellent foil for the shapes made by PB’s guitar. The Shed was enthralled for over an hour by this most mercurial of talents. Thank you East West . A stunning night.

Rosanna Rothery - Daylight & Stars review
Capturing that special moment.
Daylight and Stars, a contemplative classic EMOTIONALLY-cracked vocals... an understated, intimate delivery... sweet melodies... perceptive lyrics - it has all the hallmarks of a Jim Jones album. Yet add to the mix a crystal clear recording with near-on perfect production, subtly sprinkled with stunning atmospheric sounds and Daylight and Stars is well on its way to becoming a contemporary contemplative classic.
A talented trinity of local musicians have put their stamp on these 13 acoustic gems: Peter Bruntnell, Dave Little and Jim himself.
Peter's Mortehoe basement studio was the recording venue and plied with red wine and treats, Jim sang and played newly scribed tunes while Peter twiddled and pressed buttons at the desks, adding an inventive backdrop of interesting sounds. Dave Little turned up on occasion to add everything from extra vocals and bass to synthesisers and harmoniums.
"It was always a bit of a melting pot and quite an informal but great fun social event," said Jim who lives in Braunton. "Because I'm not signed to a label or under a deadline pressure, the enjoyment was that we got together, I'd bring my songs and ideas and we'd just sort of work from there." The result is an album that is artful in its simplicity yet outstandingly creative and superbly recorded - you feel you could reach out and touch Jim's guitar so 'live' does it sound in your own living room. Producer Peter Bruntnell, of course, is himself an acclaimed acoustic singer songwriter whose latest album, Peter And The Murder of Crows, was roots album of the year for Q Magazine and Americana album of the month for Mojo.
"The amazing thing with Pete is, I love his stuff," said Jim. "He's a fantastic songwriter so to be working with someone who is an inspiration as well as a friend, is great. He knows my stuff and he knows where I'm coming from. He's so understated but he's amazing to be around in that process. It's just natural to him. I'm grateful to have that. It's a rare thing." Lyrics on the album turn over the twists and turns of life yet without ever resorting to a roar or rant. It's mellow but Daylight and Stars is far from melancholic.
"I'm in a good place and I think those songs just came out of life, the situations I've been in and just capturing them when they happened. That's the great thing about songs: they are little glimpses of moments that you have gone through, that you've caught. That's what I try and do really: capture little moments. Hopefully people will say: 'I can relate to that. That gels'." One of Jim's big hopes is to capture the beauty of a live 'moment'. "There is something different about albums and live performances. I was playing in Winchester the other night and there was quite an intensity about it and there was a real feeling. There was a bit of 'moment' that was almost tangible. I wanted to capture a similar thing on recording. That would be my goal to capture as much of the intensity of a live gig as possible." Jim, who is able to put his musical skills to good use by day working with the youth offending team, seems happy to let his talent take him where it will. "I've done that whole thing of going after the record deal of the century. With the music industry being as it is now I don't think that sort of thing exists anymore in the same way. It's such a different world now with the whole Internet thing going on. Just the way people are able to promote themselves, without the involvement of the industry, at such a level. "I think that chasing after the pot of gold is a bit of fantasy. As long as I'm able to make music that I want to make, the rest is almost secondary." Certainly his acoustic sketches have been coloured in beautifully on this album. However the essence of each simple melody is never lost. Essentially, whether listened to live or recorded, it would still sound like the same songs. "Some of the tracks we worked on became far too ridiculous and we had to pull them back," laughs Jim. "There's that moment where you feel you've built this ridiculous kind of production. Then you feel you've completely lost what the song is about." The pruning back has certainly worked. "I hope that it is not too much: still simple enough to get that content of the song across and just enough colour in it to add interest."

Electric Dustbowl - Review
"Pouring his life into his music is what South West based Acoustic singer songwriter Jim Jones does best. Honest, emotional glimpses of moments caught in song and played with simplicity, sincerity and soul."
Electric Dustbowl - Review
“Jim Jones had everyone mesmerised with some lovely tunes and cracked vocals. The least known performer here, he was a real revelation and his new album can’t come soon enough”.

The Bedford Star - Review
“The audience was both vocal and warm as support act Jim Jones accompanied by David Little took to the floor (there is no stage, just a line in the sand). They proceeded to set the tone and the bar with an half hour set of Jones numbers and one cover which were delivered with honesty and musicianship that was unexpected and at times very beautiful. Many acoustic duos run adrift on the rocks of plangent repetition but in this case Jones’ songs had the strength and individuality to become separate entities within the set and the cover of Mr. Young’s “Ride my Llama” was straightforward and unembellished by any tinkering and all the better for it. It is rare that a support act is asked for an encore but these boys were - they didn't deliver but they were asked."

Rosanna Rothery - Review
“I've heard Jim Jones perform his songs with just an acoustic guitar. His emotionally-cracked vocals, understated and intimate were able to bring out every word and nuance of his perceptive lyrics. You could-hear a pin drop. It's hard to get people's attention in a pub but everyone seemed mesmerised, lost in their own thoughts.”
